McMahan's Funeral Home was established in March of 1953 by Frank McMahan and his brother Clayton McMahan soon after they both returned from the Army in World War II. They both graduated from Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science, Nashville, TN in 1946. The business started in a white framed house. In later years, land adjoining the property was purchased and a Chapel was added in 1960. The business grew over the years. In 1978, Clayton McMahan died of heart disease. The business continued to grow. Frank's wife Charlotte Spratt McMahan began to work some in the business and continues to be active today. Clayton's wife Margaret Wray McMahan retired from the Rutherford County School System in 1975 as an elementary school teacher. She is active in the business today.
In 1983, John F. McMahan II graduated from funeral service and embalming school and began working in the family business. The business continued to grow and in late 1983 the construction began on an addition to the building of over 4,000 square feet. The existing building was completely renovated. In June of 1984 the new construction and renovations were completed. Today the business continues to be family owned and day-to-day operations are managed by John.
