March 21, 1939 – January 5, 2022
Betty Lou (Brown) Doggett, 82, of Chapin, South Carolina passed away January 5, 2022, at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, SC due to complications from a stroke that occurred on January 3, 2022. She was born on March 21, 1939 in Rutherfordton, North Carolina to the late Charles Lee and the late Myrtle (Monfredo) Brown.
Betty held an A.A. (1980) from Isothermal Community College in Spindale, NC and a B.S. in Business Administration (1982) from Limestone University in Gaffney, SC. She had a career in Human Resources including Stonecutter Mills in Spindale, NC and Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough, Attorneys at Law in Columbia, SC. Betty was known for her hard work, patience and helpfulness, especially with medical insurance and benefits. Throughout her life, she cherished her time with family at Lake Lure, NC. During retirement Betty led an active life of travel, walking, bridge, gardening, water aerobics and classes at the Shepherd's Center of St. Andrews in Irmo, SC. Betty volunteered at the Shepherd's Center and served as Vice President in 2020-21. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, SC. Betty will be remembered for her wry sense of humor, no-nonsense pragmatism, optimism and deep love for us all.
Betty is survived by a son, James (Jed), of Lake Lure, NC, a daughter, Laine, and her partner, Douglas Nichols, of Leonardtown, Md, a brother, Charles Brown, (Patti) of Columbus, NC, a sister-in-law, Phyllis Brown, of Spartanburg, SC and numerous nephews and cousins.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joseph Brown, her sister Jennifer Brown Owens (Jerry), her husband, James (Jim) Doggett, in 1980, her long-term partner, Ronald Billington, in 2017 and by Jed's dogs, Manda, Suzie and Clara Bear, whom she grew to love.
The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Rachel Callis-Wolfe, Dr. Jonathan Engh, neurosurgeon, and the compassionate staff of Lexington Medical Center and the Lowman Rehabilitation Center for their long term and recent care during and after brain surgery in November 2021.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 23 at McMahan's Funeral Home in Rutherfordton. A celebration of life will be held at McMahan's on Saturday, July 23 at 10:30 am followed by interment in Rutherfordton Cemetery with Rev. Caroll Flack officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pets are Worth Saving (PAWS) of Rutherford County, Isothermal Community College Library or SCETV. McMahan's Funeral Home & Cremation Services in charge of arrangements.
