Jane Horn
Cline
July 16, 1933 – April 18, 2026
Jane Horn Cline
Jane Horn Cline, 92, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend was welcomed home to heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 18, 2026. Born on July 16, 1933, in Cleveland County, Jane was the second of three children born to the late William Yates Horn and Marie Cornwell Horn. She grew up on the family home place, a beautiful sprawling cotton farm on Harris Creek. There she spent many happy days in the company of her parents and beloved siblings Joanne and Jack.
Jane attended Polkville schools and graduated with distinction in the spring of 1951. She attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, earning a degree in Home Economics and later used her degree as a teacher at RS Central High School and a home economist for Yelton Milling Company, teaching many the art of bread baking. Jane was chosen as a member of the coveted UNCG May Court, an honor bestowed upon exemplary students for their talent and leadership abilities.
On July 30, 1955, Jane married the love of her life, V.O. Cline Jr., a young veterinary student at the University of Georgia and later an officer in the United States Army. They were devoted to each other through those early years of veterinary school and military service, and soon set out to establish a home and a practice in Rutherfordton, N.C. There they grew to become valued members of the community and raised their three children Karla, Mark and Bill.
An avid seamstress and quilter, Jane enjoyed creating beautiful quilts of every color and description. She knew how to choose colors and patterns that would complement and she loved the challenge of creating a keepsake and family treasure.
Jane was also famous for her green thumb. She and V.O. took great pleasure in planting two large gardens every summer and she never failed to send visitors home with a batch of rolls, an arm load of vegetables, a jar of her famous pickles or a handful of zinnias.
Jane was always up for fun. She loved to dance with her favorite dance partner V.O. Cline Jr. and they could swing, two step, spin and shuffle with the best. Jane also enjoyed a good game of bridge, but more than that, she loved the people and the conversation.
Jane loved her country and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served a term as Regent. She felt strongly about promoting the love of God and country and supported patriotic essay writing in the local schools.
Jane was an amazing grandmother and great grandmother. A sleepover at Mommaw and Poppaw’s meant a pasture hike, a creek adventure, a cooking session, a good book, board games, and a crack of dawn fishing trip to Green River.
Jane had the heart of a servant and she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Though she never liked the limelight, she loved her church and took great joy in serving faithfully at First Baptist Church in Rutherfordton. There she was involved in numerous mission projects, served in children’s ministry and taught a ladies Bible study for many years. Jane baked countless cakes, pies and casseroles for her church family and she loved being a part of that fellowship of believers.
Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice. Phil 4:4 Today we greatly rejoice in the life of a wonderful Godly wife, mother and grandmother who never failed to point us to Jesus, Jane Horn Cline.
Jane is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, V.O. Cline Jr., and their three children: daughter Karla Cline Patrick and her husband, Dr. John Patrick, of Spartanburg, S.C.; sons William Otho Cline (Bill) and his wife, Angie, of Wilmington, N.C.; Dr. John Mark Cline (Mark), and David Urena of Winston Salem, N.C. She is also survived by her siblings, Jack Horn of California and Joanne Eaker of North Carolina. Her cherished grandchildren include Katherine Patrick Williams and her husband, Bill; Dr. Thomas Johnston Patrick, III (Jay) and his wife, Emily; Rachel Patrick Conner and her husband, Johnathon; and Emily Cline Smith and her husband, Ian. Jane’s treasured great-grandchildren-Thomas “Vee” Patrick, Ava Kathryn Patrick, Skip Wilson Patrick, and Sarah Jane Conner-were a continual source of great joy in her life.
Many nieces and nephews, who have faithfully demonstrated their love and affection throughout the years, also survive her.
Jane was deeply loved by her family, highly regarded in her community, and a humble servant of the Lord. Her life was a true testament to faith, love, and service.
“Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your salvation.”
Amen.
