Richard J Melson, age 84, of Rutherfordton, NC passed away December 14, 2021, at Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills.

He was born September 19, 1937, in Derby, Connecticut, son of the late Mitchell J Melson and the late Helen Ferron Melson. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and served in the US Army. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in the death by his wife of 47 years, Patricia A. Melson.

Richard is survived by his loving companion, Maria Godfrey of Rutherfordton, NC, his son

Dr. Stephen Melson, and his wife Amy of Rutherfordton, NC, and another son Richard Melson, and his wife Lilly of Davenport, FL. Two grandchildren, Andrew Melson of Bradenton, FL, and Lauren Melson of Rutherfordton, NC.

A memorial mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Forest City on Friday, December 17, 2021, at 12:10 PM with Father Herbert Burke and Deacon Andy Cilone officiating. There will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills; P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
