Sarah Lewis Morgan

Sarah Alice Lewis Morgan, age 97, of Rutherfordton, NC, died Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Rutherford Regional Medical Center.

A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Lewis and Annie Bell Sane Lewis. Sarah Alice was also preceded in death by her husband, Coy Morgan, in 2015; her brother, Hicks Lewis; and her grandson, Josh Campbell.

Sarah Alice was a devoted and active member of Mountain Creek Baptist Church for more than 90 years. Mission work was close to her heart, and she was part of the Ladies’ Soup Team, which helped provide funds for missions. She served her church faithfully in many roles, including church clerk, Sunday School teacher, and kept the church nursery for almost 50 years. She also taught in the Rutherford County School System for 35 years. In the community, Sarah Alice was known for growing and generously sharing blueberries from her blueberry patch. She was active with the Green Hill Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, served as a Green Hill 4-H Club leader, and participated in the ECA.

She was a graduate of Women's College now UNC-G, and was honored to return there in 2025 (75 years later) to see granddaughter Truly graduate.

She is survived by her daughter, Alice Morgan Campbell (Douglas), of Rutherfordton; her son, William C. Morgan Jr. (Patricia), of Black Mountain, NC; two grandchildren, Truly Morgan and Tanner Morgan; and two step-grandchildren, Caleb Chandler and Kyle Chandler.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at McMahan’s Funeral Home. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Mountain Creek Baptist Church, with Reverend Brian Blanchette officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials in honor of Sarah Alice may be made to the Josh Campbell Memorial Scholarship Fund or to the Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 710 Mountain Creek Road, Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
