IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sarah Marjorie
Sparks Womack
May 20, 1924 – December 18, 2025
Sarah Marjorie Sparks Womack died on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at the age of 101. Born in 1924 to Lassie Belle Byers and Felmet Laxton Sparks of Rutherford County, Marjorie grew up with four siblings: Lena, Mary, Ruby, and James, all of whom predeceased her. For a while, the family lived on the grounds of the Rutherford County home where Marjorie's parents were the resident managers, and where she was first exposed to her later beloved hobby of weaving. Marjorie attended nursing school at Charlotte Memorial Hospital, becoming an RN shortly before marrying her husband of 52 years, Bernard Womack, also of Rutherford County.
As a Navy family, Marjorie, Bernard, and their three children lived in several states and spent three years in Rota, Spain; Marjorie was often in charge of transporting herself, the kids, and all of the family belongings to meet up with Bernard wherever he was stationed. In 1968, the family retired to the Sunny View community in Polk County where Marjorie lived until 2016 when she moved to White Oak of Tryon, where she resided until shortly before her death.
In addition to Marjorie's work as a nurse, she was a talented seamstress and quilter and an accomplished weaver, taking up the latter after her children left home, and becoming a prolific producer of table runners, napkins, and fabric from which she cut and sewed various garments. She was a lifetime member of Landrum Quilters, and a member of the fiber guild of East Flat Rock. She also had an amazing green thumb and could grow anything in her prized greenhouse. Marjorie was a decades-long member of Lebanon Methodist Church in Mill Spring, where she served for many years as Treasurer and Membership Secretary.
Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Bernard in 2000; she is survived by her three children Sarah Edwards (Howard, d. 2023) of Mill Spring, Andy (Sharon) of Columbus and Jenny (Sallie) of Blowing Rock, four grandchildren: Stacey Stafford (Dane), Matt Edwards, Lee Womack (Shannon), and Jesse Womack, and four great-grandchildren, Matthew Edwards, Ian Stafford, Lilah Womack, and Marshall Womack. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who marveled at her ability to keep on going strong past her century birthday!
The family would like to express gratitude to White Oak Manor, especially Ellen and the Benson Hall staff, and to Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum, SC, for their loving and compassionate care. A service honoring Sarah Marjorie Sparks Womack's life will be held at Lebanon Methodist Church on Big Level Road in Mill Spring on Monday, December 22nd at 2 pm; the family will receive friends at a reception in the fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to one of the following: 1. Carolinas College of Health Sciences P.O. Box 32861, Charlotte, NC 28232 (Attn: School of Nursing, in honor of Sarah Marjorie Sparks, class of 1948) 2. Landrum Quilters at P.O. Box 396, Landrum, SC 29356, 3.
