Vaughan Hyder, age 79, of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

He was a retired military veteran, very active in his church, loved the Lord, and at any opportunity to share, he would do so. He always wanted to help others and volunteered actively in his community.

Born on December 28, 1946, Vaughan was the son of the late Roy V. Hyder Sr. and the late Inez C. Hyder. He was a member of Piedmont Baptist Church and the widower of the late Sandra Webb Hyder.

He is survived by his daughters, Kamay H. Gaboda (John), Heather Hyder, and Hannah Webb Godfrey (Zack); his cousin, Mae McMahan, who was like a sister to him; six grandchildren, James Clifford Toney (Partner Jennifer), John Gaboda Jr., Kierstyn Hammett, Brandy Alexis Toney (Partner Leslie), David Gaboda, and Jax Gaboda; and two great-grandchildren, Inez Toney and Asher Snow.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026, at McMahan's Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM in the McMahan's Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Wayne White and Reverend Richard Shores officiating. Interment will be Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 11:00 A M at Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. McMahan's Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
