Donna (Waters) Hughes

Donna Waters Hughes, age 75, joined her sweet husband Steve in Heaven, Thursday August 10, 2023.

She was a proud member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, volunteered at the Soup Kitchen, circles, and was chair of the Bereavement Committee, and even once sang in the choir.

Unlike Steve who had hundreds of hobbies, Donna was just happy to support him and tag along. When he got the idea to restore a 1970 Airstream, she was supportive and proud, but swore she’d never camp. However, she begrudgingly went on the maiden voyage and loved it. She would talk to anyone and at the campground she found hundreds of people to talk to. But really she just loved it when her family was all together. “Watermelon at 3”

Donna took care of Steve until the very end. She loved taking care of people, driving them to appointments and out to lunch. She made numerous phone calls and sent endless cards. She always tried to write a personal message in each even though she couldn’t spell a lick. It’s a trait that lives in all the Hughes Family. She also loved being taken care of and always had a list for her family to do when they came to visit.

Donna loved things. She was sentimental about them and she kept it ALL. If you were lucky enough to visit her home you would see items displayed from their grandparents, parents and their childhood. She framed memories and kept them on display everywhere. It’s like a museum of her and Steve’s lives.

She loved people. She was blessed by the most amazing friends. She was a member of the “Pea RidgeDining Gang” who ate together every Thursday night. She had breakfast at Big Al’s of Shiloh with lifelong friends every Tuesday morning. She relished any time she got to go on trips and adventures with her friends.

Donna was so funny. She loved laughing and making people laugh. She loved to tell stories in great detail.

Left behind with great memories are her daughter Kimberly Hughes Todd, son in-law-Tim, and son Steven Hughes. Grandchildren Gracie and Bella Todd, Kiley Ford, and husband Tyler, William Jacob,and Finley Hughes.

A celebration of her life will be held at Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 13, 2023  with Reverend Dr.  Don Scofield officiating. Receiving of Friends to follow at her beloved Fellowship Building.   Private Interment at a later date.   In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church; P O box 1133; Rutherfordton, NC 28139.  McMahan’s Funeral Home & Crematory in charge of arrangements.
