ELIZABETH HAWKINS ATCHLEY Elizabeth "Lib" Hawkins Atchley, age 90, of Carolina House of Forest City, NC died Oct 30th, 2011 at Carolina House. She was a native and lifelong resident of Rutherford County. She was the daughter of the late William Dixon Hawkins and Willie Jay Hawkins and the widow of the late James Horace Atchley, Sr. A well known face in the community, she was employed by various businesses over the span of 71 years before retiring at 86. Her most recent position was the evening receptionist at Rutherford Hospital. She was a member of the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, an elder and was active in Sunday School and Women's church organizations. She was presented Honorary Life Membership by the Presbyterian Women USA in 1989. Lib was well known for her love of flowers and provided many arrangements for weddings and special celebrations, often from her own flower garden. Her caring spirit and generosity extended beyond her family to her neighbors, her church, her workplace and the community at large. She prided herself as being a friend to all she met. She is survived by three children: Judy Atchley-Benson and McCray of Hendersonville, Joan Yelton and Ray of Charlotte, and James Horace Atchley Jr and Clara of Calabash. Five grandchildren: Heath Atchley and Rie of South Hadley MA, Heather Simpson of Brevard, Shannon Simpson of Charlotte, Ryan Yelton and Jennifer of Charlotte, Jason Yelton and Kimberly of Clayton and one great-granddaughter, Layna Grey Yelton of Clayton. Also surviving are two brothers, William Hawkins of Rutherfordton and Grover Hawkins of Melbourne, Fla and one sister, Gladys Bailey of Rutherfordton Visitation will be held Wednesday, at McMahan's Funeral Home from 6:00P.M to 8:00 P.M. Funeral service will be held 2: 00 P.M. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Don Scofield officiating. Interment will follow at Brittain Presbyterian Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Rutherford County; PO Box 336; Forest City NC 28043. The family wishes to thank Hospice House and the staff at Carolina House who provided care and comfort to Lib in her final years. Also, much appreciation to Dr. Guy Winker, her family physician, who provided her medical care and invaluable guidance for the family for many years.
