Elizabeth Ann Carpenter Thompson, age 86, passed away peacefully July 24, 2021, at Holly Springs Senior Citizen Home. Born in Pineville, North Carolina July 6, 1935, Ann was the daughter of the late Charles Coit Carpenter Sr. and Lottie Belle Wilson. She was the widow of the late Baxter (Bill) Thompson and was preceded in death by her siblings Ralph Carpenter, Charles Carpenter Jr., Lucille Stacey, George Carpenter, and Robert Carpenter. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.
Early in their marriage, Ann and her late husband Bill moved to Detroit for work, but upon retirement they returned home to Rutherford County. Ann was a homemaker and was happiest taking care of others. She loved to cook and always welcomed friends and family into her home. Ann quilted and sewed, and at the age of 70 learned to knit. She donated hats and scarves to local schools and even her mailman wore one of her creations. She was kind and generous and had never met a stranger and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Holly Springs Senior Citizen Home for the loving and compassionate care she received while a resident, and to her wonderful Hospice nurses.
Ann is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Jane Chownyk and her husband Ronald Chownyk of Rutherfordton, brothers James Carpenter of Charlotte and David Carpenter of Belmont, sisters Diane Blackmon of Lancaster, SC, Sue Carpenter of Iron Station, and Pat Suddreth of Concord.
The family will have a private service at New Hope United Methodist Church, Polk County with the Rev. Debbie Toney officiating. Interment in New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holly Springs Senior Citizen Home, 1881 Big Island Rd, Rutherfordton, NC 28139 or to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
