Herbert "Herb" John Ackroyd

Herbert "Herb" John Ackroyd, age 72, of Rutherfordton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.

Herb was born on October 4, 1950, in Dunkirk, New York to the late John & Gertrude Ackroyd. He was a graduate of Mayville Central School in 1968 and went on to earn a BSc Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1972. His early career involved retail sales and management for Kmart Corporation in Falls Church, Virginia. After moving to North Carolina, Herb became a successful Realtor, working for several firms including Matheny Real Estate, Sandy Padgett Real Estate, Coldwell Banker Horn Estate, and Coldwell Banker 650 West Realty before retiring in 2013. Having participated in baseball, bowling and golf in high school, he remained an avid sports fan his entire life embracing the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves and North Carolina Tar Heels as his favorite teams. The highlight of his interest in sports was working as an interim caddy on the PGA tour for Mark Calcavecchia. In his later years, he embraced a laid­back lifestyle. He found peace and comfort in sitting on his porch listening to the birds, reading scripture, or watching sporting events on tv. He will be remembered by his selfless nature and giving spirit always making sure his loved ones were taken care of. 

Left to cherish his memory is his sister Donna (Jack) Peters, and close friends who became his unbiological family Tracie Hill, Morgan Hill, Trinity Washington, and Bailey Davis.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2023; 3:00 P.M.  at McMahan’s Funeral Home with the Reverend Sam Henderson officiating. As a supporter of multiple charities, in lieu of flowers, family and friends request that donations be made to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Herbert's remains will be buried at the First United Methodist Church Prayer Garden with his mom and dad. The family will greet friends after the burial. McMahan's Funeral Home & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
