James (Jed) Doggett Obituary

James Edward (Jed) Doggett, 59, of Lake Lure, North Carolina passed away March 1, 2023 at home following cardiac arrest. He was born on February 26, 1964 in Shelby, North Carolina to the late James Wade Doggett and the late Betty (Brown) Doggett.

Jed graduated from R. S. Central High School in 1982.  He ran a lawn care and maintenance business for many years and was known for his careful attention to yards and homes around Lake Lure and his kindness to members of the community, including those who’d been around for many years and recent arrivals.  An easy-going people person, Jed appreciated trading stories and shooting the breeze, enjoying the company of all.  He also loved dogs, especially Manda, Suzie and Clara Bear and was an avid sports fan of the Carolina Panthers, UNC basketball and the Cincinnati Reds.  He spent time watching trains in the region and was a member of the Carolina Clinchfield Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society.  As a kid, Jed won awards for the most books read in the summer reading program at the Norris Public Library several summers in the 1970s.  His love of reading continued throughout his life, from fiction to long histories of World War II.  Jed will be remembered for his helpfulness, quick wit and deep laugh.

Jed is survived by a sister, Laine Doggett, and her partner, Douglas Nichols, of Leonardtown, Md, an uncle, Charles Brown, (Patti) of Columbus, NC, an aunt, Phyllis Brown, of Spartanburg, SC and his cousins. Jed was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle Joseph Brown, his aunt Jennifer Brown Owens (Jerry) and his cousin Robert Alan Doggett (Carol).

The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Rivers Woodward and the compassionate staff of Blue Ridge Health in Lake Lure.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 6th at McMahan’s Funeral Home in Rutherfordton.  A celebration of life will be held at McMahan’s on Saturday, May 6th at 11:00 am followed by interment in Rutherfordton Cemetery with the Rev.
