Margaret Yelton Britt

Margaret Yelton Britt, age 72, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away unexpectedly on January 15, 2022. 

She was the daughter of the late Leonard Yelton and Naomi Edwards Yelton, and a native of Rutherford County. Margaret was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother.  She inspired thousands of students during her 40 years as an art teacher, with the last 10 years of her career spent teaching art at her former high school, R.S.Central in Rutherfordton. After retirement she continued to serve the community through a variety of volunteer opportunities - from being a McNair Mentor for high schoolers to delivering meals for Meal on Wheels to being a buddy through the Friendship Club program and more. Margaret was a member at First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton since childhood and also served on several boards and committees for the church. She loved animals, especially cats, and cared for many of them throughout her lifetime. As a UNC-Chapel Hill graduate, she loved Tar Heel basketball and would shake her Carolina blue & white pom-poms at the TV during games. She treasured being a grandmother and was often voted the “silliest” by her granddaughter. If you were fortunate enough to know Margaret personally, you were undoubtedly charmed by her warmth, quick wit and sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved her. 

Margaret is survived by her mother, Naomi Edwards Yelton of Rutherfordton, one daughter, Lindsey Edwards Britt and her husband Michael Daul of Durham, NC and one son, Logan Alexander Britt and his wife Ashley of Charlotte, NC. She was the proud grandmother of two granddaughters - Naomi Olive Daul and Mavis Margaret Daul, who lovingly referred to her as “Bubba.” In addition she is survived by her brother Charlie Yelton and wife Emily of Lake Lure, NC,  two nephews, Robert Yelton and wife Misty of Rutherfordton, Michael Yelton and wife Michelle of Lake Lure, NC and two great-nephews, Jackson and Ryan Yelton.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Rutherfordton in the Memorial Garden at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 29, 2022, with Reverend Dr. In-Yong Lee officiating. Interment will be at First United Methodist Church Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Heart of the Foothills Animal Rescue (www.heartofthefoothills.org) or First United Methodist Church (264 N. Main Street, Rutherfordton, NC 28139) and designated for the Friendship Club.
