Sara Annette Fuquay Layman, of Gastonia, NC

January 25, 1933- August 15, 2023

Sara Fuquay Layman, age 90, formerly of Spindale, NC passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Brookdale Senior Living in Gastonia, NC. 

Born in Lillington, NC, raised in Raleigh, NC, married June 29, 1952, and raised her family at Lake Waccamaw, NC. She retired from the banking industry to the NC mountains, where she spread her entrepreneurial wings with a Christmas Shoppe in Boone, NC.

Sara was an avid Mary Kay consultant even at 90 years of age.  She loved interaction with all people, family, and friends, and was an accomplished Domino’s competitor.

An independent child of the Great Depression era, Sara was always grateful for her station in life, and enjoyed getting “dolled up” every morning.  Her encouraging and pleasant demeanor turned strangers into friends. Sara was a member at Piney Knob Baptist Church.

Sara was preceded in death by her single mother of four, Eula Womble Fuquay, two brothers, one sister, husband, Harry, and precious great grandson, Daniel Shields.

Sara is survived by three sons, Matt & wife Kim, Mark, and Paul & wife Robin.

Nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren: Grandson Luke Layman & wife Jenny, (great granddaughter Tenley, great grandson Beckett), Granddaughter Kayla Shields & husband John (great grandsons Jack, Ryan, Lewis and great granddaughter Ellie.), Grandson Kyle Layman & wife Nastasia (great granddaughters Charlie, Andy and Joey), Granddaughter Meagan Lanning & husband Matt (great granddaughter Avery, and great grandsons Easton & Nolan), Grandson Britt Layman & wife Holli, Grandson Tyler Layman & wife Jenna, Granddaughter Elizabeth Layman, Grandson Samuel Layman, Granddaughter Jerrica Harris & husband Matt (great grandson Ryker, great granddaughter Emery & great grandson Zane.)

Her quiver was full.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Piney Knob Baptist Church. The funeral service will be at the church at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 19, 2023 with Reverend Casey Stockton and Reverend Carrell Pruette officiating. The funeral service will be streaming live on the Piney Knob Baptist Church facebook page. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Piney Knob Baptist Church, 1534 Piney Knob Rd., Rutherfordton, NC 28139.
