Susan Hendrick Obituary

Susan Vance Hendrick, age 69, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. 

She was the daughter of the late Dr. Harry Vance Hendrick and the late Elizabeth Beavers Hendrick and she was a native of Rutherford County. Susan was a lifelong member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church since 1959. She was a deacon, church treasurer, from 2002-2009, moderator of Presbyterian Women, a circle member and Sunday school teacher. Susan was awarded the Life Membership award in the Presbyterian Women. 
She graduated from R-S Central High School in 1968 where she served as a student council member for four years. Susan served as the first female Student Body President at R-S Central. She also served as the Student Body Secretary and was a delegate to the National Student Council Convention in 1967. Susan was also a two time delegate to North Carolina Association of Student Councils Mars Hill Leadership Workshop. She was the winner of the JL Taylor First Honor Award in 1968. 
Susan graduated from Salem College in 1972, where she served  as a member of the Student Government from 1968-1972, and was the Student Body Vice President her last year there. Susan started her career being a teacher at TC Robertson High School in NC, from 1972-1975. She was voted, Teacher of the Year in 1975. Susan moved to R-S Central in 1975 and worked there as a teacher and counselor until 2002.
She was the Student Council Advisor from 1975-1994. In 1987 she was the recipient of the, Kate Parks Kitchin State Student Council Advisor of the Year.  
The day after Susan retired as a teacher and counselor at R-S Central she started working as the Health Sciences Counselor at Isothermal Community College, from 2002-2015. She was also the recipient of the, Golden Apple Award. 
Susan was a Board Member and Board Chair,  of Rutherford Polk area Mental Health Authority(1993-2003), as well as Western Highlands Mental Health LME(2003-2012). She was the co-founder and member of the Rutherford Behavioral Coalition. Susan also served as a member, president, secretary, treasurer and committee chair of, Kappa Kappa Iota (1974-present), and Delta Kappa Gamma International Educators Society, 1978-present).   In 2019, Susan was inducted into the Rutherford County Schools Hall of Fame. 
Susan was a very passionate selfless person when it came to serving for others.

Two Grandchildren
Claire Lake Keever, and Bram Hendrick Keever.

Many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces. 

There will be a private, family only, graveside service in honor of Susan with Reverend Dr. Don Scofield officiating. 
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1133, Rutherfordton, NC 28139. McMahan's Funeral Home & Cremation Services in charge of arrangements.
